These Chutney and Cheese Puff Pastry Straws make a great party appetizer for the festive season! They are also ideal for lunch boxes and kids will absolutely love it.
I can hardly remember a time when there have not been friends or family over on an important festive day ever since I started cooking! Entertaining loved ones is my favorite passtime. When I was living by myself in Bombay, I would have friends over all the time who would happily taste my new recipes, tease me for the heck of it but still finish it off and go back home to tell their respective moms to get that recipe from me. The next day, I would have their moms come up to me asking for the recipe that I made last night. This was like a routine for me which I loved. My apartment was known for great conversation and food!
More than day-to-day food, I enjoy cooking on special occasions. Festival time is the only time when everyone wants to enjoy rich food without any guilt and that gives me an opportunity to cook some new and interesting recipes. When it comes to party food, I swear by Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry. This is one product that is always there in my freezer because I never know when I’ll need it! I love experimenting with these Puff Pastry Sheets because there is no limit to creativity when it comes to using them in a recipe. They can be molded as per your requirement.
The recipe that I tried today using these Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry Sheets is called Chutney and Cheese Puff Pastry Straws. This is an adaptation from my childhood favorite lunch box recipe called Cheese Chutney Sandwich. My mom would make these sandwiches for us on extremely busy mornings. This was her go-to recipe when she was pressed for time and we didn’t mind that at all. My brother and I loved it and would look forward to this in our lunch box. I wanted to use this recipe as my inspiration and give it a new dimension. Instead of bread, I decided to use Puff Pastry Sheets.
I got the straws idea from a local restaurant and decided to use it. The chutney I made was a mix of Chermoula and pesto sauce. In a blender, add cilantro, mint leaves, pine nuts, garlic, green chillies, lime juice, olive oil, saffron, Parmesan and salt. Blend to a smooth consistency.
Thaw the Puff Pastry Sheets and then spread this prepared chutney evenly over the sheets. Sprinkle cheese and cut it into 1 cm (1/2 inch) wide strips. Twist each strip and place it in a baking tray. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the twists with butter and bake it in a pre-heated oven at 450 degrees F for 15 minutes.
Once out of the oven, sprinkle chaat masala on it and now your Chutney & Cheese Puff Pastry Straws are ready to be devoured. They are crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. This appetizer pairs well with tea/coffee and is a great conversation starter. It’s an easy to make finger food that is lip smacking! You may have noticed that I have used a new herb called chervil here. A French parsley that’s commonly used to season mild-flavored dishes. It’s my new ingredient for the week and what better way to use it than in this recipe?!

Chutney & Cheese Puff Pastry Straws
- 2 sheets of Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry
- 1 bunch cilantro
- 1/3 cup mint leaves
- 2-3 tbsp pine nuts
- 5-6 cloves of garlic
- 2-3 green chillies
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Pnch of saffron
- 2 tbsp Parmesan
- Salt as required
- Grated cheese
- Melted butter as required
- Chaat masala as required
- In a blender, add cilantro, mint leaves, pine nuts, garlic, green chillies, lime juice, olive oil, saffron, Parmesan and salt. Blitz to a smooth chutney consistency.
