Apple Khoya Kheer is a delicious Indian dessert made using only 5 ingredients! This kheer can be made on any festive occasion and is served warm or chilled!
Winter is coming and so is the festive season! Sorry, but don't mind my GOT reference here. We just finished binge watching all the 7 seasons and now cannot wait for the last season. But we know it's a long wait. Sigh! As we all wait for it (im)patiently, let's make the most of the time we have at hand and whip up some delicious meals and enjoy life! Yes, I had to connect it all to food, you see! BTW, who is your favorite character? Mine is John Snow! Love him!
For Indians, second half of the year just goes in celebrating festivals. There is one nearly every other week. I enjoy all this galore especially the food and clothes part of it. Festive season means new clothes that are bright and colorful, you decorate the house according to the festival and food gets the top priority always. Apple kheer is my aunt's (mom's sister) favorite dessert. She learnt it from her MIL and I got to know from her that this recipe has been in their family for generations. I was already sold! I decided to prepare this kheer for Navratri this year and that is what I did.
This dessert requires just 5 main ingredients and takes about 15 minutes to get prepare. Peel the apple and grate them. Heat ghee
in a pan
and fry nuts like chopped almonds
, pecans
and cashews
for a minute and then add the grated
apple. Continue to saute for 2-3 minutes. Take it off the flame and let it cool completely.
Soak saffron strands in warm milk. In a thick bottom pan
, add milk
, crumbled khoya (easily available in any Indian grocery store), sugar
and saffron + milk. Mix and keep stirring at regular intervals till the kheer thickens. The khoya will crumble and the sugar will melt by then. Take it off the flame and let it cool down as well. Once everything is cooled down, add the apple mixture to the kheer and give it a stir.
Garnish with some edible flowers or nuts and serve chilled. These can be served slightly warm as well. This kheer is slightly thicker and creamier than the rest. Apples give it was warm yet winter feel to it. This kheer is not just comforting but also mouth-watering. Serving this age-old traditional recipe for prasad gave me immense satisfaction today. I kept the recipe intact and did not wish to tweak it in any way as I wanted to maintain the originality of this dessert. A simple yet delicious recipe!
