Palkova is a South Indian sweet made during festivals & happy occasions. This recipe is an instant microwave recipe made using just 4 ingredients. Traditional Milk Palkova is given a chocolate twist this time to make it more appetizing.
Palkova was the magic word for us, growing up. Whenever my mom would say that she is making palkova, we would be at our best behavior till its ready. Sometimes I felt my mom would make it just to calm us down. While my nani (grandma) would prepare this milk palkova on the first day of every year and during Diwali. However, whenever we would visit them in Trichy, she would ensure that we get a taste of her delicious palkova at-least once before we leave for Bombay. My nani’s palkova was famous all over the neighborhood. Just the aroma would spread the word that she is making this sweet at home and she would have surprise visitors over to get a taste of it.
My mom’s palkova was great too, after all, she had learnt it from her mom who is an expert. While I have not been a great fan of sweet dishes since childhood, palkova and gulab jamuns being an exception. Whenever she would serve palkova, my brother and I would wipe off the bowl clean. I have always seen my mom make it in a pan as microwave was not a kitchen essential back then. I remember standing next to her while she patiently prepared this sweet dish for us. Once I became tall enough, she would let me stir the milk occasionally and that would excite me the most. This is the first dish of 2018 that I prepared in my kitchen which I wish to dedicate to my hero – my mom. I have given it a chocolate twist but the base recipe remains the same as hers.
This is an instant recipe for a reason. It just takes a couple of minutes in the microwave to be ready and is a great choice of dessert when you have last-minute guests or kids demand for something sweet. In a microwave safe bowl, add condensed milk, yogurt, ghee and cocoa powder. You can also add dark chocolate chips to the bowl. Mix them together lightly and microwave it for 10 minutes.
You need to keep checking it every minute. Take it out of the microwave, give it a stir and put it back in. Keep repeating this till you notice the mixture thickens up and the chocolate chips have melted. The mixture will be sticky and thick. Quick and easy chocolate flavored palkova is now ready. You can garnish it with nuts and serve warm or cold. This sweet dish is rich, creamy and will melt in your mouth from the first go. You can prepare this palkova without adding chocolate as well. The timings may vary for different microwaves, so I suggest you keep checking it every minute. Be careful to not let it burn. The next time you have unannounced guests, you know what to do! Fret no more and make some chocolate palkova!
