Masala Soda Popsicle is a quick fix ice pop recipe using coca cola and some Indian spices. When you have nothing at hand, make this yummy Popsicle and cool off!
Few months ago I was visiting my family in my hometown - Bombay. While I was there, I had vowed to myself that I will visit all possible street food joint which have been my favorite in my growing up years. There is a famous street in Ghatkopar, Bombay called Khau Galli which literally means " A street to eat!" If you ever visit Bombay, please do visit this street at least once. It's worth your time. Here you will find some amazing varieties of street food and all of it vegetarian. I wanted to visit my shrine for one more reason - inspiration!
Masala Soda or Goli Soda is a popular street drink and at any given time, you will find a herd by the vendor serving this drink. Be it summer or winter, rain or shine, the guy who runs this street food stall is always busy. Right from school going kids to the women out for grocery shopping or college kids, this drink is devoured by all. I am guilty of it too. I never miss having it whenever I am in this side of the town and it is pretty much often because my bestie stays nearby.
Me and my college friends decided to binge on street food on one my weekends there. We went hopping from one stall to the other and I was enjoying this little gastro trip. I had gotten enough meat for my Instagram page and the vendors would happily let me take a video once my friends told them that I would make them famous on Facebook! Ya right! 🙂 It was funny but kinda cute. After thoroughly relishing each and every food stall, we decided to call it a night with a Masala Soda.
This drink is nothing but spiced up soda and mostly Coke or Thumbs Up is used to make it. However, it is one of the most refreshing drinks I have had. Once back home, I had decided to feature this drink on Cookilicious, however midway to my prep, I decided to present it as a Popsicle instead! The recipe is super simple. In a bowl, add coke
, chaat masala
, lime juice
, cumin powder
and amchur powder
. Mix it well and pour in Popsicle molds
. Freeze for 5-6 hours.
Fun fact - there is a special masala for this recipe that is sold in the market and my friend ensured that I got some this time. If adding that masala, then you do not need any other spice powders to make this drink. Masala Soda Popsicle can be enjoyed after a heavy meal or as a last meal of the day. Whatever is your excuse, you will enjoy this ice pop for sure and you will keep coming back for more! I am just glad that I got to recreate a childhood favorite treat giving it my own twist!

What is the special masala..where can I get it
I have given the alternatives if you do not find this masala. However, this masala can be found in Bombay. Its called Masala Soda Masala.
We were in India in January and were just discussing how much we missed the spices and flavors, but it isn't always easy/refreshing to eat them in the hot New Orleans summer. This is a great compromise! Thank you. We will give it a shot.
Oh that is great! Do give it a try! 🙂
