Shrikhand Milkshake also known as Piyush is a sweet and creamy Indian beverage made with shrikhand, yogurt, milk and saffron. This aromatic summer drink is yum!
With holidays around the corner, we are all looking for beverage recipes that are fit for entertaining. I don’t know about you but all our get-together are family centric with lots of kids in different age groups. Hence, when I plan my menu for hosting a party, I keep that in mind. The dish needs to cater to everyone and this Shrikhand Milkshake fits the bill perfectly. It’s a recipe I accidentally stumbled upon on my first official trip to Gujarat. This was way back in early 2000 when I was working for an Indian company as an HR executive. I loved the fact that my job then required me to travel within India occasionally.
I feel travel opens up so many avenues and makes your spirit soar. It teaches you something new about every place, be it their culture, food or lifestyle. I had been to Ahmedabad which is every foodie’s delight. This city is bustling with food joints at every corner. Just the variety of street food there will blow your mind. I am not even counting the number of dishes served in restaurants there! It’s truly a foodie’s heaven and I was happy to visit this city twice in my life. This is where I had my first Piyush!
Piyush is nothing but shrikhand milkshake! The name intrigued me at first. It’s a name usually addressed to a human but never a food and that is why it tempted me to try this drink out. I had been to Ahmedabad one summer and a colleague of mine offered to take the team out for lunch and that is when I was introduced to this delicious drink called Piyush. If I remember correctly, everything I had that day was new and different that it stroked some chord within. However, Piyush was something that stood out the most for me and I have been craving to have ever since!
Finally I got the opportunity to prepare it for Cookilicious and for an old friend who was visiting us. The recipe is super easy. You need shrikhand for this recipe. In a blender, add yogurt, milk, shrikhand, nutmeg powder, cardamom powder and sugar. Blend all until mixture is smooth and creamy. Pour into earthen/clay pots and place into the refrigerator for 2-3 hours. Serve Piyush chilled and garnish with saffron and sliced pistachios.
This drink can be made for parties, get together, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and/or any other festive occasion. If you do try this recipe, please do share it with your friends on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. This will keep me motivated to develop more interesting recipes.
