Vietnamese Cold Coffee with Folgers® Coffeehouse Blend is an easy iced Coffee recipe. This recipe has Folgers coffee, ice and sweetened condensed milk in it making it insanely delicious!
I hail from the South of India – and we South Indians love our coffee! South Indian filter coffee (we use a different kind of filter – not the paper filters in coffee machines) is insanely delicious and very famous throughout India. One could say we South-Indians are the flag bearers of filter coffee! 😉
Though the distinct aroma of South Indian coffee is largely because of the coffee beans and chicory used, I like to think the method used to prepare the coffee has something to do with the taste as well. Instead of using a coffee machine, South Indian coffee is prepared using the traditional percolator (also called the filter). This is how I make it, it’s how my mother made it and her mother before her made it – so you see, it’s practically tradition to make coffee this way!!
The process is simple : Pack coffee powder into the upper compartment of the percolator and pour boiling water on top. Let it percolate through the night. Voila! the decoction is ready in the morning. Add boiled milk and sugar, and your coffee is ready. My folks used to start their day with a cup of filter coffee. In fact, they couldn’t function without coffee (like most people I know!!) and would get splitting headaches without their daily morning ration. Looking at this, I decided very early on in my life that I will not get addicted to coffee. In fact, I am one of the few South Indians (and we are a rare breed indeed!) who has never had filter coffee their entire life!
I did well until high school, but then my BFF introduced me to this thing called Cold Coffee. I was highly impressed with the taste and the simplicity of this drink. Since then, I have become a cold coffee addict instead. So much for trying to not have a coffee addiction ever! Sigh! KR loves his coffee too . I’ve been trying to wean him and have had some success, but not much. He usually has instant coffee as its much quicker, but when my in-laws visit however, it’s back to filter coffee.
Folgers is our go to brand here in the US and you’ll usually find it in our pantry. However we had never tried Folgers® Coffeehouse Blend before. This is a medium dark blend that is smooth, bold and new to Publix. When I came across this opportunity to feature this brand on my blog, KR was more excited than me! “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup!”, he quipped. Both of us were eager to make this Vietnamese Iced Coffee recipe which we had tried once at a local Asian restaurant. Since we had to brew the coffee first, we decided to use the South Indian traditional filter coffee maker instead of the coffee machine. You can of course use your coffee maker or french press to brew this as well, but we decided to go the traditional route.
The recipe to make this delicious Iced Coffee is ridiculously simple. Place the ground coffee in the filter compartment with perforations. Flatten it with a spoon and place the presser with handle over it. Pour boiling water over it and fill up to 3/4 level. Cover with lid and wait patiently till the coffee decoction percolates into the lower vessel. You can even leave it overnight.
In a serving glass, add sweetened condensed milk, ice cubes and the freshly prepared concentrated brewed coffee. Mix it all together and serve chilled. KR asked for some chocolate topping, therefore, I grated some chocolate and garnished the drink. I have to say, the Coffeehouse Blend delivers a great coffee taste, very bold and distinct. It stands out even with the taste of the condensed milk, which is great!
This kind of cold coffee is something very new for me. I had never used condensed milk to brew coffee before but I love how it turned out! Quick Tip – If you do not have condensed milk at home, boil 1 cup evaporated milk with 1 1/4 cup sugar and use this instead. Homemade sweetened condensed milk ready in a jiffy! The taste is inviting and flavorsome. Its creamy texture is very soothing. An ideal drink for all seasons, day/night.
