Cantaloupe Berry Smoothie Shake is refreshing, energizing & healthy! Its easy, quick & filling all at the same time. A good alternate to a light breakfast!
I think I can never get tired of having smoothies! It is a big thing coming from a non fruit lover to make this statement. A couple of years back if anyone had told this about me, I would have laughed back. There was no way I could enjoy fruits the way I do now. Everyone tried in their own way to make me have a fruit but failed miserably. Starting from my parents who would try to lure me with a fancy looking fruit to my college friends who would randomly play the ‘Guess this Fruit’ game with me, nothing really worked on me. My mom would literally bribe me to atleast take a bite of a fruit in exchange for something I wanted but even then I could not be bothered to eat it. I was OK with a milkshake made of certain fruits as long as they were well pureed and did not have chunks in it. I feel so bad my behavior back then and sorry for them. Later when my friends got to know of this, they began teasing me. I actually didn’t know of many fruit names (barring the few basic fruits) and therefore they started quizzing me with fruit names whenever we would be in the local market. Even my embarrassment did not compel me to finally pick up a fruit and eat it. There was no way I was going to be a fruit person!
But as people say, never say never! After getting married to KR and moving to US bought many changes in my life. The first big change was leaving my country India and moving to the US. Being culturally different, I had to get used to many things. Right from the fact that house help is not easily available here and that we have to do all of the housework to the fact that the street food scene here is nothing to what it is in Asian countries. There surely was a lot of adjusting to do and I gradually got blended into this kind of living. But adjusting to the food here in general was one mammoth task. In fact, I am still getting accustomed to the kind of food that is available here especially in restaurants. Being a vegetarian in this country is not that easy. Although now people have begun to sit up and notice vegans and do have an occasional vegetarian/vegan item on the menu but its still a long way to go. Just the other day, we ordered vegetarian fried rice at a local restaurant. They had clearly said there is no meat on their menu. I loved the rice and devoured it happily. Later when we were chatting with the chef, I asked him if he had used any secret sauce to make this rice dish and he began to tell me what all he had used.
That is when I heard him say ‘Oyster Sauce’ and my heart sank. I had just enjoyed a meal which claimed to be vegetarian but had oyster sauce in it! I did let the chef know that they need to either edit their menu or tweak their recipe if they want to cater to vegetarians. Fish and eggs don’t fall under the vegetarian category, people! Anyways, sorry for the digress but this is something that I strongly feel about. In India, I had my house help come in the morning and make a hot breakfast but here since I have to do that myself, I began to look for quick fixes. That is when KR suggested that we can have smoothies for breakfast and he then introduced me to this. I was not on-board immediately because I dreaded smoothies due to its main ingredient – fruits. KR played a smart move here. He suggested that I make a smoothie for him while I can have a bowl of cereal. I was fine with that and thus began my association with smoothies. It started with me making it for him and then began taking a sip or two from his glass to now actually enjoying my tall glass of smoothie, I have come a long way. Nowadays, my morning routine mostly includes a handful of almonds followed by a glass of healthy smoothie. I like to mix it up with new fruits every time.
This week its melon & berries. Without much ado, let me share with you how I make my Cantaloupe Berry Breakfast Smoothie Shake! In a blender, add any milk (it can be dairy or non dairy), cantaloupe, flaxseed powder, oats, protein powder and dates. Blitz to make a smooth smoothie! Pour this into serving glasses. Wash the blender and then add milk, ice cubes, blueberries, honey and if you want you can also add natural fruit & vegetable powder. This is purely optional. Blend to make a smooth puree. Pour this over the cantaloupe smoothie. Garnish it with some dried blueberries and natural fruit & vegetable powder. Serve chilled. Now this a fancy way of serving a smoothie. The color contrast makes the smoothie all the more appealing. I like it that way because it feels like starting the day off with a dessert shake! But it’s OK if you feel that you don’t have so much time to be so elaborate in the mornings especially on a weekday. For if you are not in the mood to indulge, just put all the ingredients together in a blender and whip up your smoothie shake. It will just not resemble like mine but it will still be a Cantaloupe Berry Breakfast Smoothie Shake! Either ways, this melon and berry combo in a smoothie is great and extremely delicious.
