“Alexa stop the alarm!” “But baby don’t have to got to work, it’s 8 am already. You need to wake up.” “I know, but give me 15 more minutes please.” This is how our conversation begins every single day. KR needs his extra 15 minutes while I am rearing to go at the first sound of alarm. He is still sleepy and cranky even after waking up. Clearly he is not a morning person. 🙂 I am the total opposite. My mind is racing with all the things I need to accomplish today and I am swiftly working in the kitchen. Be it unloading the dishwasher, prepping KR’s lunchbox or preparing breakfast. I like the idea of making something fresh and warm for breakfast everyday but on some days it is so crazy that KR just wants a quick pick-me-up and head out for work. On those days, it’s a smoothie that comes to my rescue. I always buy some fresh fruits on my weekly grocery shopping trips. That way I am always ready to whip up a quick smoothie whenever the need arises. What better way to say good morning than a glass of freshly prepared fruit based smoothie! In fact, every week I get a new set of fruit and vegetable combos to give my smoothie a new and different flavor. I like to mix it up and create something new for my palate every week.
Smoothies seem to be everywhere these days. All restaurants especially breakfast joints are serving a whole variety of smoothies and fruit juices on their menu, grocery chains are selling packaged smoothies, food bloggers are creating new smoothie recipes for you to try. There is clearly a reason for that. Smoothies are quick to prepare and easy to transport, making them the perfect on-the-go snack. Plus, they’re delicious. In order to make a great smoothie, you need to balance the nutrients and flavors. It should contain a balance of carbs, protein and beneficial fats from whole-food sources. Plus they are a delicious and smart way to take advantage of all the fresh seasonal fruit in the summer or frozen fruits in the dark days of winter. Although there are a lot of talks about them not being that good for you. I think anything in moderation is fine. One must not overdo it. Surviving only on a juice cleanse is not advisable. You need to mix it up with solid foods as well. Also try to mix up fruits and vegetables to create a balance of flavors and to notch up the health quotient. Having said that, yes it is always better to consume fruits and veggies in their raw form. Since I hate consuming fruits raw, smoothies work great for me.
Today’s power smoothie has many nutritious ingredients. Mangoes being the tropical fruit are not just juicy, flavorful and pretty to look at but are high in minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. Although many years ago they were seasonal, now they are available all year through. If not, then you can surely find them in the frozen section. I still miss devouring Alphonso Mangoes here like I did back in Bombay. The natural sweetness of an Alphonso is unmatchable. The other power ingredient used in this smoothie is Spinach. Adding spinach to drinks is a healthy way to incorporate this nutrient dense, iron rich leafy vegetable into your diet, especially if you’re on-the-go. But if you have any reservation to add a vegetable like spinach to your smoothie, don’t be afraid. They do not alter the taste of the drink in any manner. They just lend the deep green color and all the nutrients. Next is the Greek yogurt. We always pick up the ones which have the least amount of added sugars in them. Always read the label, friends. You need to be sure what you are consuming. Greek yogurt is a great source of protein, especially if you need to avoid meat or are a vegetarian. Add chia seeds to your smoothie for that extra protein and fiber boost.
You need a good blender to make a smoothie. Then there is a science behind adding the ingredients. The liquids go in first and then the solids followed by the leafy vegetables, protein powder and chia seeds. So first we add water to the blender followed by low-fat Greek yogurt, cut orange, mango cubes, baby spinach, protein powder and chia seeds. I normally do not strain it but you can do so if you want. You can add crushed ice as well if you like your smoothie super chilled. Blend them all together to make a smooth and creamy smoothie. You need not strain this drink and can consume it as is. Pour the Super Healthy Mango Spinach Yogurt Power Smoothie into drinking glasses and serve immediately. I had some leftover raspberry which I crushed and used it as a garnish. It gave a nice contrast to the green smoothie. You can skip that if you don’t have raspberries handy. You must have noticed that I did not add any additional sugar or honey to the smoothie because I like it that way. Plus you don’t really miss the sugar as the smoothie is naturally sweet due to the ingredients used. Do away with the processed sugar. You don’t need it in your smoothie or your life! This particular smoothie is refreshing plus it keeps you energetic and full for a long time.
