Pepper Rice with Black Eyed Peas

Black Eyed Peas & Pepper Rice is a flavorful rice preparation. With the goodness of protein & combination of pepper, this rice dish is delicious & hearty!


  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp black sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 4-5 cloves
  • 3-4 peppercorns
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4-5 garlic cloves
  • Half inch ginger
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 1 can black eyed peas/1 cup boiled black eyed peas
  • 2 tbsp pepper powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1.5 cups cooked rice
  • Salt as required
  • Dollop of ghee to add before serving


  • Heat ghee in a pan. Fry black sesame seeds and cumin seeds. Then add the whole garam masala like bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves and peppercorns, fry for a minute. Then saute minced garlic, ginger and onions till the raw smell goes away and the onions turn translucent.
  • Then add boiled black eyed peas, pepper powder and salt. Mix it and saute it for 2-3 minutes. Next add the cilantro and cooked rice. I cook the rice in the rice cooker. Give it all a good mix. Adjust seasoning as required. Lastly add a dollop of ghee on top and serve.
