Vegan Chivda With Rice Krispies

Prepare this unique Indian savory snack mix called Chivda (Chiwda) with crunchy Rice Krispies, nuts, and spices. Make this namkeen in just 5 minutes! Perfect vegan dry snack for Diwali. This addictive Indian-style trail mix is a combination of all flavors - sweet, spicy, nutty, and salty.

  • Heat oil in a big deep dish pan or a wok. Once the oil is hot, temper mustard seeds and chana dal. Next, add curry leaves and chopped green chillies. Fry for 45 seconds.
  • Now add the cashews and peanuts. Fry all of this for a minute or till the nuts turn light golden.
  • Then add spices powders like turmeric powder, asafoetida, and chilly powder along with salt. Mix the spice powders with other ingredients and continue to fry for a minute.
  • Lastly, add the Rice Krispies to the pan. Lower the flame and mix it together so that the oil mixture coats the rice flakes well. Do a final taste test and adjust the seasonings as needed.

Notes

Remember to transfer the prepared hot chivda from the pan to another bowl. If you leave it in the hot pan, it will burn. You can either use plain roasted peanuts or masala peanuts. Soak chana dal for 10 minutes before adding to the pan. It will be easier to bite into. Chana dal can be swapped with Daliya or roasted gram. If you don't have fresh curry leaves, skip adding them. Ensure the nuts and lentils are fresh and not stale or else they will spoil the flavor of the chiwda.
