Amortentia is the most powerful love potion in existence. My version is non alcoholic, fruit based & delicious. It’s Harry Potter’s Valentine’s Day Special!
I am obsessed with Harry Potter and everything to do with it. Actually KR got me hooked onto the books when I came here. Ever since, I follow and believe in this magical world wholeheartedly. It also helps that we have the Harry Potter’s world almost in our backyard – Universal Studios which we enjoy visiting at least twice a year. Personally I enjoy the books more than the movies. However the movies just help put things in perspective. I must also say that am highly impressed with JK Rowling for her creation and imagination. What a vision! Even my in-laws, brother & SIL have got hooked onto this because of us!
Just the other day, we were doing a Harry Potter movie marathon and while watching the Half Blood Prince, the love potion scene lit a spark in me. I decided to make this love potion for Valentine’s day. Now few things about this wonder drink – It has a different aroma for everyone who smells it, reminding each person of the things that they find most attractive. The effects of the potion on a person are described to be nearly instantaneous; with the person who drank the potion appearing “pale and sickly” and becoming obsessed with the object of their affections. No wonder, I chose this drink for this day!
Not that any of us needs this drink, but just the idea of recreating the love potion from the book and movie was just very exciting. Valentine’s day is all about love not just for your partner but for everyone around you. It’s a special day for all. I agree that we don’t need one specific day to celebrate love and it should be expressed everyday. However, there is no harm in going out of our way on one special day and show to our loved one how much they mean to us. And my way of showing my love for KR this year is by making this wonderful Harry Potter Love Potion Punch called Amortentia.
You will find many recipes online but I wanted to make a non alcoholic drink which had to be fruit based. I chose fruits like raspberries, strawberries, cranberries and rambutan to make this love punch. This was the first time I was cooking with cranberries. I have fallen in love with it. What color and flavor. Loved the tanginess and tartness of the berries. Rambutan and raspberries gives this drink the required sweetness. All in all a great fruit punch for you to try this day!
In a pan add washed cranberries and water. Bring it to a boil and then simmer to cook till the berries burst and the mixture becomes thicker. Mash them with a spoon and using a sieve, strain the juice. In a blender, add raspberries, strawberries, rambutan, sugar and lemon juice. Blend to a juice consistency by adding enough water. Strain this juice and add it to the cranberry juice.
Keep it chilled till it’s time to serve. Pour in serving glasses, add ice cubes, fresh mint leaves and some cranberries to the drink and serve chilled.
While this drink is ideal to be served for Valentine’s day that is for the whole family to enjoy, it can also be served at any party like a welcome drink. It’s refreshing, cool, tangy and sweet. A perfect blend of a drink. Since Amortentia drink is supposed to remind each one of something special. This drink reminds me KR’s ruggedness, has an earthy smell to it and the color attracts me towards it. It surely does the job for me!
