A cool way to enjoy the traditional Indian chaas/buttermilk is to convert them as Ice pops or Popsicle. Making chaas is a 2 minute job, and then all it requires is a Popsicle mold and a freezer. A Summer snack ready! These Pops are spiced with herbs and spice, making them irresistible.
What would we South Indians ever do if there was no yogurt in our lives! We thrive on it and look for all possible excuses to have it at any given point of time. In fact, mainly the older generation need to have their curd rice after every meal. Even when they or we travel, this is like comfort food and a must have. In times when curd rice is not available, the next best option is Chaas or buttermilk. It's our quick fix for any digestion related problems plus it makes a great cooling drink. My dad and FIL make the best chaas in the world. All they do is, just add water to the yogurt along with salt and asafoetida and whisk it. That's it! It tastes yummmmmm!
Over the years, I have come across many adaptations to this recipe and tried them too. Remember Smoked Masala Chaas/Buttermilk? Now finally I have found my own sweet spot and I stick to that whenever I am craving for some chaas, especially on a super hot sunny day. While making buttermilk this time, I wanted to do something different with it and thought of this idea of turning it into ice pops! Recipe - In a blender, add yogurt, mint leaves, green chillies, cilantro leaves, asafoetida, roasted cumin powder, salt and water. Blitz well. Pour this into Popsicle molds and freeze them overnight.
That is it! Indian Spiced Buttermilk Ice Pops are ready! You can enjoy them on-the-go or as a light after-school snack. We have it now after dinner as well. I must say that I am loving this way of enjoying buttermilk that the regular kind. It's so much more fun this way. The herbs and the chilly gives it the required punch and flavor to this Popsicle. A cool and refreshing way to enjoy buttermilk is to convert it to an Ice Pop! Cool right! Give it a try and you will not be disappointed. You are missing something in life if you haven't tried these Popsicle yet. 🙂
