Chickoo Banana Milkshake is a thick & creamy smoothie. This drink is naturally sweet due to the smashing combination of fruits plus it tastes amazing!
This is my ultimate favorite...est milkshake ever since I was a little girl! The word Chickoo is very very close to my heart for various reasons. Chickoo was the only fruit I ever ate in childhood without a fuss. So my mom then started making Chickoo milkshake for me whenever I deserved a treat. Even when we went to restaurants, I would always end my meal with a Chickoo milkshake. Yum! I loved this shake mainly because its taste and its super rich, thick and creamy texture. It truly is one of a kind thick shake. You can understand my fondness for this fruit from the fact that I even nicknamed my younger brother 'Chickoo' because he looked all cute and chubby as a kid. In fact, that is what I call him even today even though he doesn't look like one anymore! Every time this name pops up on my phone when he calls, my heart smiles for more than one reason! Now you know why! This drink also reminds me of dad. Whenever we wanted to have a heart to heart conversation, we two would take off to the nearby juice stall and discuss life over a Chickoo Milkshake! Best memory ever!
There is a very famous restaurant called Sadguru in Chembur (where I grew up) located in Bombay. For me, after my mom, they make the world's best Chickoo Milkshake! My trip to India is incomplete if I have not had my fill of this shake. I have made the mistake of ordering this at other restaurants but nothing comes even close to the way this restaurant makes it. If you ever happen to be in Bombay, I would highly recomend you to visit this restaurant in Chembur not just for this drink but also for the Pav Bhaji and other dishes. It's one famous restaurant that is definitely worth the visit. The Indian name for this fruit is Chickoo but its also known by many other names across world like Sapota, Noseberry, Sapodilla Plum, Chico Sapote etc. I was surprised to find out that this fruit actually originates from Mexico and Caribbean. Thanks to the Spaniards who bought this fruit to the Indian sub-continent. Today it has become almost like a native fruit to India that everyone loves. This fruit is easily available in India and is also one of the cheapest. While I love it for the taste, it is a wonder fruit with many benefits. It's round in shape and brown in color. It is soft and mushy on the inside and is naturally sweet to taste due to the natural sugar fructose (energy booster) and sucrose in it. Chickoo is a must-eat for its anti-cancer properties, due to the presence of antioxidants. Its peel contains a good amount of fiber, and hence it is advisable to eat it unpeeled.
This fruit has a huge seed inside which I always dreamt of sowing and growing my very own Chickoo tree. I will probably do that someday. It has natural dietary fiber that helps improving tummy health and fight with constipation and other digestion related problems. This fruit is considered to be good for lactating mothers as well due to essential nutrients and carbohydrates. It also helps during pregnancy for overcoming nausea and dizziness. This fruit has a lot of minerals including calcium, iron and phosphorous. Hence its good for bones and helps in strengthening them. Eating Chickoo regularly helps to remove toxins from our body, and is thus great for our skin and hair. It keeps them healthy and moisturized. In fact Chickoo is known as a 'happy' food as it helps promote the production of collagen, and prevents the growth of deep wrinkles. Knowing so many benefits of consuming this nutritious fruit makes me love it even more (as if that was possible!).
Unfortunately, Chickoo is not that commonly available in the US and I have to pick it up from the frozen section at the Indian market. It's not the same but works just fine for the recipe. The recipe to make this lip smacking milkshake is an effortless process. While normally I make it only with Chickoo, this time I have also added a frozen banana for that extra flavor. In a blender, add frozen Chickoo and banana slices, milk, vanilla extract and any chocolate powder. Blitz it to make a smooth and creamy milkshake. The trick is to add more Chickoo pieces in the mix to give it the required thickness and creamy texture. Notch it up for Christmas and dip the serving glasses in chocolate sauce and roll it over Christmas themed sprinkles. Pour in serving glass and serve chilled. This would make an ideal breakfast on Christmas morning as it's a drink everyone will enjoy plus its so simple to make. Chickoo Milkshake is like home to me. Whenever I am feeling low or missing home, KR makes me this drink. This reminds me of my dad so much. I dedicate this post to the first man I ever loved - My dad. Thanks dad for giving me so many wonderful memories that will last beyond this lifetime.

KR and I love to begin our weekend with a cool milkshake on most Friday evenings post dinner. That is our way of unwinding and kick start the weekend. While most do that with a glass of wine, we being teetotalers (I may occasionally sway away from that), do it with a milkshake or a mocktail. Some drinks that you may like as well are Amortentia, Vegan Figs Chocolate Coconut Milkshake, Rambutan Rose Lassi, Homemade Spiced Coffee & Pumpkin Latte , Cherry Lemon Iced Tea , Fresh Guava & Watermelon Non Boozy Drink, Vegan Zaffrani Mewa Doodh and Thandai Milkshake.
