Aloo Mutter is one dish that is made nearly across all the Indian homes. Its something like one universal dish for us. If there is nothing to cook, we land up making Aloo Mutter because this dish requires ingredients that are easily available at home at any given point of time. Don't we all have potatoes and peas in our pantry always? To top it all, this dish is finger licking good! This vegan curry can also be packed in lunch boxes along with chapati. Personally, I believe that anything with potatoes tastes great and is easy to make. Potatoes and green peas make a delicious combo in this dish when cooked with Indian spices. Don't believe me, try it for yourself! I suggest first you eat this at a restaurant and then try my recipe at home. Then tell me which you liked more! Deal?
You know, when my mom first came to Bombay post her marriage to my dad, she was just a simple girl from the South of India who had only cooked South Indian food until then. Moving to this city changed her in many good ways. She learnt new languages - Hindi & Marathi, her sense of style changed a bit, her confidence grew and the best of all - her food horizon expanded! She was suddenly exposed to multi cuisines thanks to our cosmopolitan neighborhood. One of the favorite pastimes of the ladies in our building was to exchange recipes! One of our Maharashtrian neighbor taught her some North Indian dishes to make and Aloo Mutter was one of the first dishes she learnt. She would then make it regularly for all of us and very soon it became my dad's favorite dish.
The recipe that I am sharing today is hers. Over time, she has tweaked it and given it her own touch. But the soul of the dish is still hers. I always remember her fondly when I prepare Aloo Mutter. I so wish she could taste the food I make. I know she would be so happy. This curry features in my menu every other week because we love it at home! Without much ado, let me share my family recipe with you. Heat oil in a pan
and add chopped potatoes to it. Cook them along with salt, coriander-cumin powder and turmeric powder. Once they cooked, take it out onto a plate. Heat oil in the same pan, temper the cumin seeds
. Then add the onions, garlic and ginger paste. Saute till the raw smell goes away and the onions turn translucent.
Then add tomato puree and chilly powder. Saute till the tomatoes are pulpy. Now add the spice powders like turmeric powder, coriander cumin powder, curry powder, garam masala and salt. Mix and let it cook for a minute. Then add the green peas. Continue to saute for another 5 minutes. Add water now to get desired consistency. Mix and cook for another 3-4 minutes. Lastly add the cooked potatoes and chopped cilantro, mix and take it off the flame. Aloo Mutter is now ready. Serve it with any Indian bread
, water rolls or dal and steamed rice. Add crushed kasoori methi along with garam masala if you like that taste. You can also squeeze a lime to make it more tangy. This makes for a great meal on a weeknight or for family gatherings on weekends. Do give it a try!
