Mango Mastani is a rich & creamy milkshake made using mangoes, ice cream & mixed nuts. A specialty party drink from Pune that’s perfect for the summers.
Like most Indians, I too watched both the recently released Bollywood movies – Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani and loved them. On our way back home from the theater, as we were dissecting the movie, my friend’s mom started talking about Mastani. She was an Indian warrior from the Bundela Rajput clan. She was the second wife of the Maratha Peshwa Bajirao. She is said to have been a beautiful and brave woman, skilled in arts, literature, and warfare.There are many legends associated with her. One of them is, that Mastani was so beautiful, that when she would chew a paan (stuffed betel leaf), the red juice from the pan would be seen going down her throat in a streak. I don’t really know the reason of this drink being named after her, but my guess is that since this drink is so beautiful to look at, it must remind people of her.
Mango Mastani – now why didn’t I think of this earlier?? This is a popular milkshake in Pune, Maharashtra. My friend and her mom have had this there. This got me thinking. I decided to make this milkshake immediately. KR and me both are mango lovers. Its disheartening that we do not get the Indian Alphonso Mango here in the US. It is supposed to be the sweetest of them all. But still I was going to give this a try. While going through the aisles of an Indian grocery store near my house, I came across this Mango Pulp tin of a popular Indian brand. Excitedly I added it to my cart. I later got to know that it is available on Amazon as well, if you do not have an Indian grocery store nearby, you can order it here – Deep Kesar Mango Pulp. It’s available on Prime too! I reached home and announced to KR that he is going to get Mango Mastani now. He looked at me with a puzzled look. “Wait and watch!” was my reply.
I quickly mixed all the ingredients like the mango pulp, whole milk, vanilla ice cream in a Blender and whipped this milkshake. It was a sight to watch as the blender did its job. Loved the deep yellow-orange color of this milkshake. It’s so rich and creamy too. While serving them in glasses, I added another scoop of ice cream on top, garnished it with some saffron and chopped pistachios & almonds. Viola, Mango Mastani is ready! As I took the drink towards KR, the smile on his face was worth it. He took a sip and said, “Thank you for being a food blogger and trying out new stuff, I love them all!” With laughter and happiness we both enjoyed Mango Mastani to our hearts content. It was the best milkshake ever!! I would highly recommend this milkshake to all. It surely is worth the (little) effort or the (high) calories once in while! 🙂
I make this drink regularly especially when we have families with kids visiting us. They all love it and I feel it’s only kids who manage to enjoy food and drinks guilt-free in a way its supposed to be enjoyed while we adults. no matter how hard we try, stop ourselves from relishing good food on many occasions. I feel it’s OK to let go once awhile and indulge and Mango Mastani is all about indulgence. You need to try it for yourself to know how good it tastes. This being a 4 ingredient recipe, can be prepared within minutes and served on any occasion. Wow! I am really gushing over it. 4 Ingredient Mango Mastani Drink Recipe
- 3 cups mango pulp
- 1-2 tbsp sugar - optional
- 2-3 scoops of vanilla/mango ice-cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/3 cup chopped Dry fruits
- Pinch of saffron
- Mix all the ingredients like the mango pulp, whole milk, vanilla ice cream in a Blender and whip this milkshake. While serving them in glasses, Add another scoop of ice cream on top, garnish it with some saffron, chopped pistachios & almonds. Viola, Mango Mastani is ready!
You can get creative with the garnish as well. You can also use fresh mangoes, make a puree of it and use it in the recipe if mango pulp not readily available. Adapted from a popular drink in Pune.
