    What is Cranachan

It is a traditional and popular Scottish pudding that's similar to a trifle. It’s a layered dessert, made with whipped cream, toasted oats, honey. juicy raspberries, and whiskey.

It's their early summer treat when raspberries are in season. Traditionally it was made with crowdie cheese (a type of soft Scottish cheese) which has now gotten replaced with heavy cream.

    Trending now

I was so excited to come across this classic Scottish dessert while watching a cooking show on TV. I immediately wanted to give it a try and was looking for some recipes.

I came across Nadia Hussain's recipe from Nadiya Bakes. I loved her version of this traditional Celtic cuisine dessert because it had mangoes and it was non-alcoholic!

I am a sucker for mango desserts and this one just sounded wonderful! I also got to know that it's called the “King of Scottish desserts”.

    Mango recipes on the blog

Clearly, I love using mangoes in desserts and drinks! They add so much flavor and obviously a beautiful color! Here's proof:

    Why make this

I am so glad to have discovered Scottish cuisine. I see myself making more from this cuisine. Mango Cranachan is one of the easiest and simplest dessert recipes you can make!

    • Very minimal prep work required
    • Make it in 15 minutes
    • Needs basic pantry ingredients
    • No-cook, no-bake dessert recipe
    • It's a non-alcoholic version of the dessert
    • Make it ahead of time
    • Serve them in individual jars or glasses
    • Works great when serving large crowds
    • Can easily be made vegan

    Ingredients needed

all the ingredients needed to make Mango Cranachan placed on a table with labels on them
    That's all you need!

Mango - We need mango pulp and mango fruit in this recipe. I would personally prefer Indian Alphonso mango pulp as it's the sweetest and creamiest.

But you can use any mango pulp. Use fresh or frozen cut mango for this trifle recipe.

Heavy whipping cream - this is what will give this mango dessert a creamy and light balance.

Sugar - You can use castor sugar or just powder regular sugar and use. You can experiment with other kinds of sugar as well.

Cornflakes - Luckily, I had turmeric-flavored cornflakes which worked well here. But feel free to use any kind of cornflakes you have. You can even try using some other kinds of cereal.

Salted butter and peppercorns give this cranachan recipe a unique flavor.

    Here's how to make it

    It's all in the process!
    • Melt butter in a pan and toast the cornflakes till they are crispy. Also add freshly crushed black pepper to it.
    • Transfer the cornflakes to a small bowl. In another bowl, add mango pulp.
    • To that add finely chopped mangoes.
    • Mix it all together and keep it aside. You can also store this in the fridge to chill.
    • In another bowl, add heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar. Using an electric beater or whisk, beat the batter till it forms stiff peaks.
    • Add half of the cereal to this bowl and mix it together. You can also chill this mixture in the fridge till needed.

    Layered dessert!

When you want to serve this mango trifle, take the bowls out of the fridge and begin to assemble.

    • In serving glasses, add a tablespoon of cornflakes.
    • Add a layer of the mango mixture.
    • Followed by a layer of cream. Keep alternating between the two till you fill up the serving glass.
    • Top with toasted cornflakes and crushed black pepper. You can also dust some icing sugar on top.

    Serving suggestions

Serve Mango Cranachan immediately or you can also store it in the fridge till it's time to serve. Enjoy it as a dessert after a meal or serve it at your next house party! They look so pretty!

This delicious no-bake mango dessert is ideal when serving large crowds, during the festive and holiday season, or for date nights! It's an irresistible mango trifle!

    Tips, recommendations, and suggestions

I have used turmeric-flavored cornflakes in this recipe. But you can use any cornflakes available to you. You can also use oats or granola instead to make this Scottish dessert.

Cornflakes taste better and are crunchy if they are lightly toasted. Keep tossing them around on medium flame till you hear the noise.

Store the leftover cornflakes in an airtight container and use them as needed. Mix a little vanilla essence into the cream for some extra flavor instead if you like.

Instead of mangoes, you can pretty much use any other fruit like raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, or strawberries.

Use good quality mango pulp. It should be sweet and smooth. You can also prepare fresh pulp using mangoes. Just grind it till it's smooth and creamy.

You can prepare cranachan ahead of time and store it in the fridge for 4-5 days. You may also freeze it. Thaw it overnight and serve.

If looking for a lighter option, use Greek Yogurt instead of cream. To make vegan mango cranachan, use vegan whipping cream and vegan butter in this recipe.
