What is Mango Mastani
Come summer we all crave mangoes and mango-based treats, especially in India! Given that there are so many varieties of mangoes available, every home/restaurant is serving a variety of mango-based dishes and desserts!
Mango Mastani is one such drink. Pune ( a city in India) claims to be the creator of this drink and it does have a cult status there and now all around the world. There’s a chain of juice centers called Sujata Mastani in Pune where they serve this Mastani drink in more than ten flavors like Chocolate, Dry Fruits, Kesar Pista, Pineapple, Vanilla, Orange, Rose, etc. This place is worth checking out.
Mango Mastani is one of their bestselling drinks for obvious reasons! I mean, just look at it, it's gorgeous! Also, it is important to not think about the total calories in Mango Mastani because it is an indulgent royal drink and should be consumed on special occasions without having to worry about the calories! But if you are looking for a leaner version, then give this Sweet Mango Rose Lassi a try!
The story behind the name Mastani
While the drink is certainly interesting, how it got its name is even more so! The story goes that this drink is named after Queen Mastani who was the second wife of Peshwa Bajirao, a legendary Peshwa ruler.
Mastani was an Indian warrior from the Bundela Rajput clan. Now it is believed that she was an extremely beautiful and brave woman, skilled in arts, literature, and warfare. There are many fascinating legends associated with her.
One such legend is, that Mastani was so beautiful, and her skin so delicate and fair, that when she would chew on a paan (stuffed betel leaf), the red juice from the pan could be seen going down her throat!
I find this story very interesting! While no one really knows the main reason for this mango drink being named after her, my guess is that both she and this drink are beautiful to look at! If you love watching Bollywood movies then do check out this movie called Bajirao Mastani. You will get to know her a little more.
Why make this
- Made with few basic ingredients
- Make it in just 10 minutes
- It can be served on any occasion
- Can easily be made vegan
- An indulgent drink recipe
Ingredients needed🧾
Mangoes - You can use fresh mangoes of any variety. However, Alphonso mangoes taste the best. Just ensure they are fully ripe, sweet, and not sour. You can also use mango puree or canned mango to make this milkshake. They can be found in all leading grocery stores, Indian stores, and on Amazon.
Milk - Whole milk or full-fat milk is preferred as it's more luscious and creamy. You can also use any non-dairy milk or creamer.
Ice Cream - Vanilla flavor works the best in Mango Mastani but you can also use mango-flavored ice cream. You can use homemade or store-bought ice cream.
Sugar is optional. In case the mango you are using is not sweet enough, add little sugar. Any kind of sugar is fine.
Whipped cream and toppings - This is what gives this drink a fan following! Along with whipped cream, you can top it with whatever toppings you have at hand. You can go as indulgent or as lean as you want.
Some common toppings for Mango Mastani are - almonds, pistachios, saffron, chopped mango, glazed cherries, jelly, sprinkles, and/or tutti frutti.
I use this nut chopper to chop nuts. It works like a charm!

How to make it 🔪
- Add mango puree or freshly chopped Alphonso mangoes to the blender. Reserve some cut mango pieces for garnish.
- Then add chilled milk to it.
- Next, add the vanilla ice cream. Add sugar if the mango is not sweet enough. Blend it all together to make a smooth puree without any additional water. Chef Tip - The consistency of this drink should be thick and creamy. Keep the prepared mango milkshake in the fridge for now to chill.
Serving Suggestions 🍽
When it's time to serve, pour the chilled mango milkshake into serving glasses. Fill up to ¾ of the glass. Top it with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chopped nuts like almonds, pistachios, and saffron. You can also add some chopped mango, glazed cherries, jelly, and/or tutti frutti on top. Serve immediately. Drizzle some flavored syrup (rose, chocolate, etc) on top if needed.
BTW, you can totally enjoy this mango juice without any toppings! It will taste great nevertheless! Toppings will make it more decadent and tempting. In India, since mangoes are in season during the summer, this drink is enjoyed mainly during this time of the year. However, if get mangoes all year through, then you can enjoy it any time. You can serve it at parties, family dinners, brunches, or on date nights. Kids will love it as much as adults. Mango Mastani is surely the drink of the season!
Top recipe tips 💭
Do not add additional water or ice cubes while making the milkshake. It has to be thick and creamy. Another way to ensure this is to pre-cut the mangoes and freeze them. Then add them to the blender. Always use chilled mangoes and milk for making this summer drink. Full-fat milk is preferred as it tastes richer and is creamier.
Use mango ice cream for a more intense mango flavor. I, however, prefer vanilla because it helps balance the flavors. Feel free to customize the toppings as per your liking and availability but be generous with it.
Recipe FAQs 📖
If using fresh mangoes, it has to be completely ripe and should have no sour taste. Alphonso mangoes are preferred. They are the sweetest and that's why also very expensive. But totally worth the price!
Even frozen mango pulp or puree works. Feel free to use whatever is available to you. I have made this with fresh mangoes and puree. Both work great!
You can prepare this Alphonso mango milkshake in advance and store it in the fridge. It stays good for a week. It freezes well too for a couple of months. Just add the ice cream and toppings before serving.
If you want, pour this mango drink into popsicle molds along with some toppings and freeze it. You can then enjoy them as a luscious mango dessert!
Yes, you can very well make it vegan. Use dairy-free milk like almond milk, coconut milk, or oats milk along with mango pulp in the blender. Use vegan vanilla or mango ice cream.
